*shivers* I love the contingent quality to all of this--nothing is quite certain, everyone's in the middle of doing something else, partly in the present but not entirely. I hate the romanticizing of violence that come with war stories (sorry, that's not even about your story, I just feel like have to say it), but this captured what it must have felt like to be a pawn in someone else's chess game.
