He studied his scars some nights, when the dorm was empty.

Remus was not prone to self-pity most of the time, but when the maudlin mood took him, he could indulge in it for hours. He knew the lines and details of each of his scars, watched them change over time, stretch, lighten in color, alter in texture. There was the jagged tear across his cheek that pulled his nose slightly off-center to the left, the five perfectly parallel gouges up his forearm, the missing chunk of his right ear, the bite marks on his rib cage. He knew them like a roadmap of his own body, and he hated them for their ugliness, and he loved them, because they were his.

There were days he could look at himself in the mirror and not see them at all, feel almost normal, and days when he saw them and took pride, and then there were days like today, where each nick and scratch was like a beacon blaring the message Freak, unlovable, unattractive freak.

He was running his fingers over the tiny scar through his eyebrow, his face only inches from the large mirror over his bureau, when he realized he was not alone. In the reflection, he could see Sirius staring over at him from the doorway. Their eyes met.

“What are you up to, Moony?” Sirius asked, a worried frown on his face.

Remus moved away from the mirror and sat on his bed, picking up a book that was lying there, discarded, and flipping it open.

“Just reading, Sirius. What are you doing?” he replied, hoping his voice sounded casual even though his heart was thumping from the jolt of being caught.

“I’ve been standing here for a few minutes, Moony. You were not reading.” Sirius approached Remus and took a seat on the edge of the bed, next to him.

“It’s nothing, Sirius, really,” Remus said. “I…I thought I was alone.”

Sirius reached out and brushed his fingers along the thick, ropy scar down the side of Remus’s neck. The touch sent a shiver down Remus’s spine.

“You shouldn’t feel bad about these, you know,” Sirius said. “I can’t imagine you without them. You wouldn’t seem half as bloody tough.” He nudged Remus’s shoulder with a grin.

Remus smiled. “Thanks, Sirius.”

“Does it really get you down?” he asked.

Remus sighed and nodded. “They're ugly. Sometimes I just think…well…I think no one will ever…” He couldn’t voice his fears, even to Sirius. He looked away, wishing Sirius would just leave him to wallow in his miserable thoughts.

“What? You think no one will ever do this?” Sirius reached over, grabbed Remus’s chin, pulled his head around to face him, and kissed him.

Remus froze as Sirius’s lips met his. He had never kissed anyone before, and he didn’t know what to do, but it seemed Sirius did, as his lips softened and parted. Remus followed his lead. Sirius’s tongue flicked out and met Remus’s lips, causing little shocks that vibrated through his body. He tried it in return, and felt Sirius respond by deepening the kiss, letting their tongues tangle, running his finger along the scar on Remus’s cheek.

It was only when Sirius broke away and Remus could look him in the eye again that it occurred to him that his friend, his best friend, had just kissed him like he meant it.

“Now you don’t have to worry anymore about that never happening,” said Sirius, sitting back.

“Sirius…” started Remus, his breathing rapid, his fingertips touching his tingling lips, but Sirius stopped him with a stern look.

“No need to thank me. I came up to get you, as James has decided a competitive game of Queen’s Wand is to be desired, and I need a partner. Come on, no sulking.” Sirius held out his hand to pull Remus up from the bed. Remus took his hand, which was warm and comforting, and allowed himself to be silenced.

Glancing over his shoulder into the mirror as he left the dorm room, hand still held in Sirius’s, Remus noted that his scars did look rather manly in this new light.
