Hello friends,

Lots going on in the past weeks, and I haven't shared any of it...so here on a calm Friday evening, how's about a wrap-up?

In the Flesh, Big Bangs that Weren't, Snupin Sadness, New Fic in Progress )
Hope you are all enjoying 2015, so far.
People, it's the future.
*hug*

Hi lovelies!
Two of my favorite fandom people, [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole and [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee both just had birthdays. I've been a quiet little lurker, but I just had to pop up and say "Hooray!" and "Happy Day!" to you both. I hope, even though we have all drifted in our various ways from our rabid fandom lives, that we'll all still be around these parts, cheering each other on, for a long time to come. *hugs*
In local fan news, I'm still happily embroiled in In the Flesh fandom. I'm working on my piece for the Siren Big Bang, which posts in January. It's actually my first official Big Bang, with an awesome art collaborator and everything! My writing is Slow, with a capital S, so I'm hoping to get a big chunk written over Thanksgiving. The lovely [livejournal.com profile] bk7brokemybrain has taken on the thankless job of beta-ing for me, which is beyond wonderful. If only I had time to properly interact and edit like I used to, hon!
(On a related note, you should all watch In the Flesh. In case I haven't mentioned it enough...)

Okay, my brief moment of calm has been shattered by the waking up of the child, so I'd better post before another long set of weeks go by in silence.

*hugs you all*

*dashes in*

Hi! I updated my latest In the Flesh fic, To Fight His Corner, link is to chapter two. The rising as seen by Sue Walker. Grim, short, on to Simon in chapter three. Hurrah!
School started this week, so I'm in the flurry of adjustment that entails every year. Going okay but exhausting, so far. The dream of reasonable, year-round school gets more and more real to me every fall- so much lost over the summer, for students and teachers...*sigh*
Okay, that's it for my fly by. *hugs*

*dashes away*

Well, I wrote another In the Flesh fic, so I'll post here again, just in case any of you are tempted...

Title: Betwixt and Between
Summary: It is still hanging there, between them, the unanswered question.
"You left. I searched everywhere for you. Where did you go?"
Pairing, Characters: Simon/Kieren, Jem, Sue, Steve, Shirley, Tom, a few others referenced
Length: 4100 words
Rated: PG-13
Warnings/Tags: Simon POV, post-series 2, angst, developing relationship

So there's that! I'm proud of it, but it sure needs a brit-pick...I'm so lazy about betas now. What has happened to me??

I was up really late last night watching various Robin Williams scenes and interviews, shedding some tears. It's always odd to feel sad over the loss of someone you only know through their work, but this one really got me...so many really influential moments in my life have a corresponding Robin Williams film, from Popeye as a child, to Good Morning Vietnam when I was just starting to understand how much I love the exploration of war through art (that was middle school) to Dead Poets as an angsty teen, to Fisher King in high school (god, seeing that movie has a life changing story with it for me...) I even have this crystal clear memory from very small childhood of being at my friends house and watching a video of his stand-up, and during the entended riff on the name of his penis ("Mr. Happy"), I had this epiphany that I must be growing up since I was allowed to watch this now.

Take care of each other. *hugsyou*

So, I've been writing constantly, more chapters of the Sherlock thingy I posted before, if anyone cares to check it out: Adagio, in Baker Street. It mostly a big pile of UST based on the tossed off idea in canon that Sherlock taught John to waltz. There are now three chapters, and 4 and 5 are written in my mind, I know where I'm going. I need to keep my pace up because I'm on a week break now, and I know I will not be able to write as much when I'm back to work. Chop chop, me.

I've been thinking a lot this week, as I let myself get completely swept up in Sherlock fandom like I haven't since HP first grabbed me and wouldn't let go, about what got me into fandom in the first place. Now I'm seeing parallels all over. Navel-gazing below the cut. )

Hey kids!

I am almost finished with my story for this year's Snupin Santa, and I am really pleased with it, finding myself so nostalgic and hoping some more writers might make a return appearance after long absence. IT IS NOT TOO LATE! The link above takes you to the sign up page for claiming prompts. There are so many AMAZING prompts there, just waiting for someone to give them some love. I know much of the Snupin crowd has dispersed over the last years, but if you are tempted at all...Join me! You can still have a few weeks to submit and post in the fest.

In other news, I have a completely plotted story for Kinky Kristmas in my head, but it has not yet emerged out onto the computer screen. Eek! Deadlines. They loom. I can do it, though. *nodnod*

Random observation about life...now about half the technology in my life has a touch screen and the other half does not, and it is damn confusing! I keep poking at my laptop's screen, wondering why it is not loading, or even worse, jabbing on my students' computer screens trying to help them when they do not have touch-screens. They love to laugh at me.

How are you? *hugs*

Hi, still here. Since I've posted so infrequently these last few years, I'm taking the posting challenge at my own pace. Hell, if I post thirty times THIS YEAR, never mind in a month, it will be a huge accomplishment.

So, another school year underway, so my time becomes more precious, but also quite a bit more organized. This year started with a jolt, so much going on super fast, so I'm actually looking forward to October when I think the pace will slow back to only average crazy.

I'm still shoulders-deep in Torchwood fandom... cut for Torchwood ramblings and thoughts on being late to a fandom and what *is* what the point of a top ten list and what episode I love and did I say rambling? )
westernredcedar: (Sherlock library)
Spent all day today getting tons more of my old fic up on Ao3. It's been such a nostalgic day because of it; each fic is like a little time capsule of my life over the last seven years.

A decent percentage of my longer fic is now up, and someday I have to start on my ficlets and drabbles (so many!).

Anyway, nothing more to say today, but here is my Ao3 masterlist for reference.

Oh, and while I'm here...the ficlet I wrote a couple days ago totally made me go back and find this glorious Lily and Severus in the 70's art by pojypojy that I have always adored. This is exactly what they looked like. *nodnod*

Hi again!
My summer of fandom floating continues. Sherlock! Avengers! The Voice! Top Gun!?!
So now...I just watched Torchwood (I know, finally) for the first time (seasons 1 to 3). I mean, I knew at the time that I should be watching it, but I just had no time. So instead, I've fallen madly in love now, years late. MADLY. MADLY. MADLY IN LOVE. So I've been reading fic like a mad fic reader, because the show is so damn elusive and frustrating and (consistently, maddeningly) shows you scenes in one room when you really want to see the scene happening in the room next door, or five minutes later, or the next day, or whatever. So, fic.

So, my question: Anyone out there want to rec me some great Jack/Ianto?? I've read a lot in the last few days, but I just know that there must be some (more) epic and wonderful shit out there. And I want it all. *greedygrabbyhands* Really excellent Fix-It fics are especially welcome.

In HP land, I'm considering doing one fest this holiday season if I can get my writing mojo back?? One can hope.

Also, hi! *hugs all* Send me Jack/Ianto fics recs. *smooch*
westernredcedar: (Cedar)
Hello anyone still out there!
*listens for echo*
It is my summer break from teaching, which means that I am...posting something. Woo! I actually am still here reading all the time, just lurking like a creepy little lurker rather than the grand participant I used to be. Oh well. Here's some stuff:

Fandom-wise, I have been all over the place recently. I was entrenched as a reader and fledgling writer in BBC Sherlock fandom for many months when RL totally derailed that direction. I still have most of the unfinished second chapter of the thing I was writing, and I dream of being able to complete it this summer...maybe? I simply cannot promise. Then I spent a sweet month or so just reading any decent The Voice RPF and thinking this was pretty odd, even for me (*ahem*, [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee, recs further down, keep reading...). Now this summer has been entirely consumed by catching up on Avengers and the Marvel Universe movies and fic...damn, it has been a fun few weeks of cheesy superhero goodness. I saw The Avengers back when it came out last summer, but only just watched Thor and Captain America, and Iron Man still waits for me.

I also just enjoyed [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole's most recent round of [livejournal.com profile] lgbtq_recs and have a list of books to order when I finish making this post!

I thought maybe I'd rec a few things I've enjoyed? I don't know. I am confident everything I'm going to mention is a classic and super well known in their individual fandoms already, seeing how my search criteria on AO3 usually starts with "Kudos" or "Bookmarks." But who knows, and I want to make a record for myself as well, so here are some various recs of things that are generally from the above listed fandoms. Or something.

Recs! )

Hi all! Let's all watch as I sheepishly sneak back onto LJ...

This month has absolutely flown by. I realized the moment that Snupin Santa was over that I needed to spend many weeks doing absolutely nothing fannish at all, just to get back in the flow with my family and my work. It was abrupt but I'm afraid entirely necessary. I'm really glad I did, even though I was wracked with guilt that I had not really wrapped up all the final pieces of the fest the way I needed to. I'm committed to taking some time this week to do all the final coordinating, updating the archive, etc. If you've been waiting around for me to do this part, here I am!

It's been a good month. We just survived the crazy snow and ice extravaganza that hit Seattle this week-- lots of cabin-fever with the SO and the toddler, though. My kid is at the phase in her development when she is exercising power like a tiny and fickle dictator. *sigh* Here was a standard conversation between us this week: "I go in snow RIGHT NOW." "Ask me politely." *simpering voice* "Pleeese, mommy." "Okay. So let's put on your socks and pants." "NO!" *runs off* From other room: "MOMMMY! I go in snow RIGHT NOW!" etc. Rinse and Repeat. There is such a thing as too much togetherness...

It is that fun time of the school year where all of the fall units are finished, and the fresh, new subjects are starting. I always get re-energized and excited at this point. It also means I have a crap-load of work to do to get everything underway. I should have used my snow days to do all sorts of things for school. Hahahahahaha! Yeah. Right.

Also, I've read 4,000 pages of The Song of Ice and Fire series in the last month or so...I'm through the fourth book, and I have a plan now to read the fifth book with a colleague of mine at school, so we can discuss as we read. Glee! That series is like yummy yummy candy that I cannot stop shoveling into my maw. I will fully admit to total addiction.

Anyway, I'm back. I'm thinking about [livejournal.com profile] hp_beholder again this year, trying to pace myself, and be smart about staying up on my writing, but not over-committing.

How are you??

Sundry

Hello my dears! I'm still here, lurking, reading, Quibbler Reporting, and writing my Snusa. Lots going on, so let's get out a numbered list.

1. GIANTS! Woo!! WOOO! WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

2. My tiny sapling is now a year old. What?? I know! We had a "party" (in quotes because it was really just adults sitting around eating and drinking while the sapling played on the floor), and baby's first cupcake was a hoot. She currently enjoys smiling, talking gibberish, crawling at top speeds, and putting things in, then taking them out again. Also a big hit: eating random 5-day-old cheerios she finds on the floor. Yes, it is quite intellectually stimulating around here.

3. In honor of my very very very mixed feelings about the approaching DH movie, I found myself rereading lots of [livejournal.com profile] blpaintchart scripts in the last few days. Just thought I'd recommend that anyone who needs to laugh so hard they pee give either of these a try (or a reread): Film Script for OotP or Deathly Hallows in Script Form. Also, I've been rereading [livejournal.com profile] deadlyhollow, the DH spork, to get back in touch with why DH made me so mad to begin with...yes, this is my prep for the movie. Hmm.

4. Ooo, I wrote something! It is posted here at [livejournal.com profile] lupin_snape and is only several months late for the fest it was supposed to be in! Yay! This gives hope to my long stranded darkfest and fantasy fest fics of the past. Maybe you'll get finished too, little friends.

5. GIANTS!!!!

How come whenever I post now, I feel like I'm forgetting something really important? *sigh*

I won't forget this however, dear flist: *HUGE HUG*
westernredcedar: (WTF)
I have low tolerance for heat, hence, I am a resident of the Pacific Northwest.
Where we have no air conditioning, because, why bother?
I cannot do 95+ degrees all week. I simply can't. You hear that, weather?? I CAN'T. *melts*

I'd go down to the local air-conditioned book store right now and sit there browsing, except that the idea of getting in my no-air-conditioning oven car to drive the three minutes sounds so horrific that I can hardly stand it.

What? I should go anyway? You are right. *tries to move*

I loathe the heat.

ETA: I'm not just whiny- apparently Wednesday might be the hottest day EVER here. Good grief.
westernredcedar: (Cedar)
I just watched the end of an episode of Bob Ross where I swear the finished painting should have been titled "Springtime in the Nuclear Winter." So eerie- this thin creepy purple light on a black canvas with lots of lightly pastel colored trees. *shiver* Bob still tried to convince us all that this was a cheery painting that would brighten up any room you hang it in. Oh Bob, how I love you.

The best part? It totally made me want to paint. Hee.

In other news, I just scared myself by signing up officially at the [livejournal.com profile] lupin_snape Retro Fest, as it has been extended and I desperately need a deadline to get a real fic written again (yes, a sort of AU, as I was hoping). Also, I'm eager to participate in something at the comm again, after long absence. I've started writing something I'm really excited about, if I can keep going.

I hope you are all okay. I've been so happy to actually be around quite a bit in the last two weeks! *HUGS*
westernredcedar: (Cedar)
Well, I'm off on an extended science field trip with my class for the next three days. I'll see you all when I return Wednesday. I'll miss you! I will have lots of lovely time to write in the evenings with zero distractions, after I tuck in the hordes and turn out the lights. SNUSA!

In honor of my impending depature, here's a lovely rarepairs rec I've been meaning to post for a few days:

Happy Camper by [livejournal.com profile] indigo_kitti
Charlie/Draco (yes, uh-huh, it works, trust me), NC-17

The Order sends Draco off to the Romanian dragon colony for protection, and Charlie is his care-taker. Guh. I lurve Charlie Weasley, and this fic paints a lusty, sweaty, beefy portrait of him that still manages to be complex and endearing (yes, he has read “Pride and Prejudice” and says “cock” regularly. These are not mutually exclusive qualities after all. *ahem*). Draco’s POV is hysterical, as is the world of the dragon colony she creates.

I’m up to my eyeballs in fabulous Snape fic right now, what with [livejournal.com profile] snape_after_dh and res fest at [livejournal.com profile] lupin_snape, so it was a lovely break to read about these two completely non-Snape characters. Highly recommended.

Have fun without me, and be good!
westernredcedar: (Krum)
So, the reality of being back at work and trying to keep up with all goings-on around here, not to mention regular RL, is settling in. The SO is going to smash this laptop to the ground soon if I don't look up from the screen soon. *must balance time better*

Anyway, I have had a great week of writing productivity so far. I completed five teeny-fics, all but one involving a new pairing and many new characters for me! Yippee!
Summing up my busy week of writing so far, pointing to a few cool things, and a brief tennis reference )

Vacation

westernredcedar: (Cedar)
Flist! Just a quick note that I am off on a short vacation to the Oregon desert (yes, it has one, and, yes, it is beautiful), so I apologize for missing commenting on all of the fabulous work you all post in the next five days, and responding to your comments to me. There is a vague chance I will happen upon internet access in the middle of nowhere, but if not I will get caught up when I return.

Those of you who are following Twelve Nights and are cursing me for vacationing when I have one Act left to post, be comforted that it will be finished by the time I return, and I will get it posted as soon as I am back, maybe Tuesday, but probably Wednesday.

I'll miss this crazy place and all of you, but the big sky and warm air of the desert are calling. Hooray!
westernredcedar: (order photo)
I just returned home from the midnight showing of OotP, but there are no spoilers in this post, because, surprisingly, I have not seen the film. Hmmm...how could that be? Read on.
