Okay, this is ridiculous.

I have low tolerance for heat, hence, I am a resident of the Pacific Northwest.
Where we have no air conditioning, because, why bother?
I cannot do 95+ degrees all week. I simply can't. You hear that, weather?? I CAN'T. *melts*
I'd go down to the local air-conditioned book store right now and sit there browsing, except that the idea of getting in my no-air-conditioningoven car to drive the three minutes sounds so horrific that I can hardly stand it.
What? I should go anyway? You are right. *tries to move*
I loathe the heat.
ETA: I'm not just whiny- apparently Wednesday might be the hottest day EVER here. Good grief.

Date: 28 Jul 2009 02:09 am (UTC)That said, I feel your pain. I was visiting friends in Oregon during the 2004 heat wave. 95-degrees sucks WAY worse when you don't have A/C and nobody knows how to deal with the heat. (Thus my decision to bring a window unit with me should I ever be lucky enough to move to the PNW.)
Could you flee to the coast till the worst is over? Pacific Ocean = natural AC.

Date: 28 Jul 2009 02:46 am (UTC)It might hit 100 tomorrow, simply unheard of around here.
I've been pushed to consider buying some sort of air conditioning unit to survive these days, but it seems like such a waste. This is so unusual. Fans and cold showers will have to do for now.
I went down to the Sound yesterday to get a little more breeze by the water, and there is a great public salt water pool down there that I should go to again tomorrow for a little relief. I'd love to go to the ocean, if I could figure out a cool place to leave the cat...

Date: 28 Jul 2009 03:03 am (UTC)I know my Oregon friends deal with heat waves by staying at work as long as possible, then going up to the mountains/waterfalls until it cools down a bit, then opening the windows and turning on the fans.
If I were you, I'd go ahead and buy a cheap window unit AC (like, for the bedroom.) So you only use it 1 week every other year. That just means it will last forever.
Remember global warming. Y'all may be getting these heat waves a lot more often in the future. The weathers screwy everywhere.

Date: 28 Jul 2009 08:42 pm (UTC)On a completely different note: Apollo at Corinth, right, and the Parthenon below? Nothing nicer than seeing architecture in folks' icons. M.

So, um, this Friday, 11am showing of HBP at Natick IMAX?
And yes! Athens and Corinth. If you got those, this one will be easy. I took them on my trip a few years ago.

Date: 29 Jul 2009 04:20 am (UTC)I scrolled through your pictures, and what a lovely, lovely trip! Many years ago, I went to Athens, Delphi, and a couple places in the Peloponnese (Nafplion, Epidaurus, Sparta, Mystra, and Corinth)--no islands, no Meteora, sadly--and I've always wanted to go back. Preferably not in March. (I think I was about as cold as I've ever been indoors while staying in an unheated hotel in, appropriately, Sparta.)
I would love to the IMAX, but I am in Extreme Dissertation Lockdown--my partner has strict instructions not to let me out of the house until...well, until more dissertation is done. Have fun! And I want to join you next time. M.

Date: 29 Jul 2009 07:08 pm (UTC)Ooh, I think they make one of my favorite beverages in your town. Pretty area; I have a friend who lives about 35 miles south on that road that goes south there.
Next year? There are two more HP movies to come!

Date: 6 Aug 2009 04:08 am (UTC)Sorry it took me a few days to respond- lucky me I had a trip planned for right after the worst of the heat, so I've been in temperate weather for the last several days, thank goodness! Hope you survived the hot. :)

I'm in California now for a quick trip and it is very lovely and not too hot, so I suppose you can have the day off...

Date: 6 Aug 2009 04:13 am (UTC)I don't know how we made it through the 103 degree day- I tried ice with the fans for a bit which was a temporary relief. We'll be purchasing a portable AC just in case this happens again.
Please send me crappy rainy weather. I miss it, and my garden needs to be watered without me exerting any energy. *is lazy*
*LOVES YOU*
PS I'm home tomorrow to catch up more...

Date: 6 Aug 2009 04:16 am (UTC)Actually, I've been away for a few days, and I hear things are much more bearable now, so I'm not worried about returning home.
Hot is fine if your city is prepared for it, but I heard one report that said 13% of Seattle homes have AC. We fail at hot. I can't wait for lovely autumn.
Also, *hugs*!! It just makes me happy to see you here!

Date: 6 Aug 2009 02:25 pm (UTC)We're still not terribly hot, but we're in the 80s now (unlike the 90s+ that is our usual August heat). Lots of rain too... can't wait to see what fall looks like! *g* I'm hoping for beautifully chill with leaves made gorgeous with all the rain...

Date: 28 Jul 2009 01:21 pm (UTC)I don't have AC either. My bedroom is on the first floor, which helps. Also, if your house is fairly well insulated, open everything up at night, then close it during the day, and draw the curtains. If it's cooling off at night, that is, and if you live in a neighborhood where you can do that.
A lot of businesses have AC now, at least all the new ones. My friend who works for the state said they don't, and they get sent home if the temp in the offices got above... 100.
When I read your post I started wondering about something. Then Maggie's post pushed the question more. Why is your side of the country the Pacific Northwest, and we're the Northeast? Is there another Northwest? Why aren't we the Atlantic Northeast? Just wondering. It's starting to get hot; 90s again today.
My car has AC; came that way, and I do use it half dozen times a year, mostly when(if) I take a trip. (Like Friday's trip to Boston to see HBP at IMAX with friends!) There have been times when I've been tempted to just go for a drive so I can be in the AC, but my environmental correctness prevails. Just usually flop in front of a fan with a book.
Hang in! It won't last.

Date: 6 Aug 2009 04:24 am (UTC)Sorry I've been such a slow replier. I couldn't turn on the computer on the 103 degree day due to the heat it gave off, and then I went on a trip and was away from the computer most of the time. Internet fail!! :) Thanks for all the tips. We did well at night to get our fans going and blow all of the hellish air out of our little house/oven, and then the SO went to work putting up reflective foil all over the south and west facing windows, so the next day was much more bearable. I'm buying a portable AC once the stores restock however, because I refuse to suffer like that again. Our new house is far too exposed and shadeless to deal with that kind of heat EVER AGAIN. Ugh.
On your northwest/northeast thought- great question! I take it as part of the general east coast bias of the country, due to how we were founded east to west- I mean, why the heck is the midwest called the midwest? It's in the middle of the country, not the middle of the west, after all. I suspect that because what was "west" changed so much over the years (Kentucky is out west, Missouri is out west, etc.), we had to get extra labels...we are, after all, the recently acquired funky stepchildren of America way out here in the corner. ;)
Thanks for all your help again, m'dear! *smooch*
