Two Snupin Santa Recs
15 Dec 2010 03:31 pmHi all! I've just been dipping my toe into fest reading while I'm still at work, but my winter break starts next week, and then LOOK OUT. I'll be reading like crazy.
However, I have been sick in bed the last two days, and actually read some fic at Snupin Santa. Yay! Except not for the sick part...anyway. SO, here are two recs!
The Strange and Curious Dreams of Herrn Ulrich Viksak by Anon
Summary: Magical AU, Prague ca. 1890. The last days before Josefov, the old Ghetto of Prague is being torn down to be rebuilt it seems the golem returns once more to walk the streets of Prague. Remus Lupin finds himself with a strange wand, an even stranger lover and no memories to fulfill a task he doesn’t even know.
I don't even know how to start talking about this one. It's like Michael Chabon has taken up Snupin fanfic under a pseudonym and graced us with this amazing piece of work. I suspect this fic won't be for everyone- it is highly intellectual, tricky, dreamlike, and intense. In fact, in all of chapter one, there is no mention of "Remus" or "Severus" (although they are both there); the reader has to trust this expert author and just go with the mysteriousness of the set-up and enjoy the amazing writing, gritty sense of place, host of characters (all of whom have subtle but intangible connections to Potter characters if you look hard), and intricate plot. I have to read this again to even catch all of the things that were going on, connections, magics, etc. It is a truly remarkable piece of writing, and I feel so lucky that it was written for my favorite pairing.
Oh, and one other thing? This fic includes a loving Remus/Tonks relationship that does no damage at all to the unbelievably perfect Remus/Severus relationship, so don't get scared away by Tonks.
Hmm. I am not doing this work any justice in this rec. If you think this sounds intriguing, just give it a try. It is incredible.
Why Potions for Pleasure went missing from the Hogwart's Library by Anon
Summary: In which Dumbledore is infuriating, Longbottom is incompetent, and both Snape and Lupin are unprofessional — especially when drunk.
This was my gift at the fest, and I love it! I requested a rollicking good time POA era fic, and man does this fit the bill. The author totally took my request to know more about the relationships between the faculty, and created a very funny story with meddling profs, a quite mellow but still IC Snape, and faculty drinks night in Hogsmeade. Love it! Lupin is a manic flirt and Snape is plenty clueless. I love the insight into the friendships and annoyances in the faculty. It's an enjoyable read for a cold winter's night. Enjoy!
