_lore on her birthday. Also, this is a little bit for Resurrection Fest as well. But mostly for lore. :)
Remus tugged at Severus’s hand, urging him into a brisk walk.
“I’ve heard we have to be there at midnight, or the magic will not work.”
Severus rolled his eyes. “You are just fooling yourself. Your belief is based on nothing but inane student lore. Perhaps some part of it was once based in fact, but exaggeration over the centuries has clearly perverted the truth.”
“I’ll just pretend you didn’t say that,” said Remus, walking faster into the cool of the autumn night. “I think this will be romantic.”
“That is precisely what I am afraid of, Lupin,” snorted Severus, as they neared the greenhouses.
Remus set down his bookbag as they entered the soothing humidity of Greenhouse Two, and grabbed Severus’s other hand. “It’s this way, I think,” he said, leading him into a tangle of green vines that sighed sadly as they passed.
“What is the goal here, Lupin?” Severus asked in a sour tone, snatching his hand away to brush an aggressively friendly branch out of his face.
“We find the flower and experience it’s midnight bloom together. Then, someday, when we need protection, we can elude death. At least that’s what I’ve heard.”
"Where did you hear this drivel, exactly," Severus asked.
"Around the dorms, and then I looked it up in a few books," replied Lupin.
Severus’s snort echoed off the glass panes. “This is the single stupidest thing I have ever done. Why do I listen to you?”
“The legend is that we have to snog madly as it blooms, so at least there will be that, even if it is just ‘inane student lore,’ Severus.” Remus raised an eyebrow.
“Ah. Well, why didn’t you say so? The prospect has vastly improved,” said Severus, striding to catch up with Remus. “Where is this sodding flower?”
Remus released Severus’s hand and started to hunt through the mess of pots and greenery in the corner. “I read we should explore carefully in this section. I’m not entirely sure what it looks like.”
“Of course not,” sighed Severus, leaning against a potting table and watching Remus scramble amongst the plants.
The sound of midnight chimes rang in the distance. “Bollocks and shite, where is it?” Remus groaned. “We’ll miss our chance. It only works on Halloween night.”
“Lupin,” said Severus quietly. Remus ignored him and continued his hurried search through the foliage. “Lupin,” he said more forcefully, standing up and crossing his arms. The other boy did not respond. “Lupin,” Severus called, and he strode up behind him, taking possession of Remus’s hand.
“Severus, we have to find it,” said Remus, turning around just as Severus brought Remus’s hand to his mouth. Severus gently kissed his palm and then sucked his long forefinger into his mouth.
“Ah…oh,” said Remus, stopped in mid-motion by the sensation enveloping his hand. His eyelids drooped in pleasure. “What about the flower?” he said quietly.
“I could care less about your legendary flower of immortality or whatever absurd name it has been given. You promised me a snog in the greenhouse, and you promised it would be at midnight,” Severus was running his lips over Remus’s captive hand as he spoke. “It is midnight.”
Remus opened his eyes and looked at Severus with hunger. “Well, I suppose I was a bit silly to think any part of that story was true,” he said, as he leaned forward and pressed his lips to Severus’s eager mouth. They let the kiss linger, first soft and pliant, and then more firm, tongues pressing with eager flicks, teeth clashing, heads and hands moving in rhythm, breath held. When they were forced to break apart for a few gasps of air, Remus sagged against Severus with a grin.
“You have successfully distracted me from the flower, Severus. Congratulations.” He dashed a quick and soft kiss onto Severus’s lips.
“You did not pose much of a challenge. You might at least pretend to resist me for a moment, Lupin.” Severus smiled with his dark eyes and kissed Remus’s neck. “The chimes have stopped. It is no longer midnight.”
“Immortality has escaped us again, I suppose,” said Remus. “I don’t think the flower is even here anymore, if it ever existed at all. It is just lore, as you said. You were correct. And you know it pains me to admit that.”
Severus teasingly pat Remus on the top of his head before kissing him again. “I’m relieved to see you are coming to your senses.” Hand in hand, they walked out of the warm, thick heat into the cool night air.
Left in a hidden corner, unseen, a tiny golden flower was in full bloom.
