"Just stand guard, Moony, and be sure he doesn't get out." Sirius's voice was a loud whisper as he disappeared around the corner of the corridor with James. His louder, "We'll be back!" echoed off the stones.

"But…I…" Remus tried, but his friends were gone. He leaned up against the door to the potions cupboard and bit his lip. Behind the door, he could hear the sound of the ladder dragging across stone and the musical clink of vials and flasks. He sighed and closed his eyes, cursing quietly. His life.

Without warning, the door behind him gave way and he tumbled back into the cupboard in a heap. His elbow hit the floor wrong and he winced and blinked back the sting of tears, grabbing his arm.

"Lupin."

Standing just above him, two vials held in one hand, the door held in the other. Eyes like a hawk finding prey. Severus.

Remus scrambled to his feet, clutching his arm. He couldn't help glancing down the corridor to where Sirius and James had disappeared, and Severus's intense gaze followed.

"I'm…I was just passing by and…I…"

"Who is with you?" Severus was small, but he shoved Remus into the cupboard with one arm and slammed the door, trapping them inside.

"No one," Remus replied quickly, and then regretted it. Severus moved closer, right into Remus's personal space, and Remus felt his stomach drop into his knees. "No one."

Severus's wand was out now, pressed against Remus's throat. "Don't fuck with me, Lupin. Who's out there?" He was so very close. Remus stared at the flush of color in his cheeks, the flare of his nostrils, the darkness of his eyes, the long line of his lips. Stared. He couldn’t stop staring, had been staring for months now, unnoticed, confused. Now Severus stared back, not blinking, just pressed up against him, breathing hard, their breaths matching, the silence extending. Someone should be saying something, Remus thought, and swallowed hard.

Severus's hand came up, and Remus flinched back against the cupboard. But then he stopped, they both stopped, frozen, and something, something, flickered across Severus's face that made Remus's heart race.

"Sirius. And James. They've gone to get some…supplies. You should run."

Severus pulled the wand away from Remus's throat and stepped back, still staring, breaths coming hard, eyes searching. Remus couldn't stop his hand, which was suddenly reaching up to brush against Severus's cheek.

Severus was the one to flinch this time, stepping back but not looking away, his eyes shielded and cold.

"Severus," Remus started, but the other boy tore away, slammed open the cupboard door, and dashed out. Remus sagged back against the shelves, blood racing.

"Morsus!" Through the door, Remus could see the flash of the stinging spell hit the wall, followed shortly by James running past at full speed in the same direction Severus had disappeared.

"What happened?" Sirius appeared in the doorway, chest heaving. "How did he get out? Bollocks! We had him!"

Remus looked down at the scuffed toes on his shoes, trying to control his breathing, then back up at Sirius. "Sorry. He got past me."

Sirius sighed, rolled his eyes, then grinned and ran off after James.

Remus let out a long breath, sank to the floor, hugged his knees, and wondered.
