A/N: Hi Nim! Look, torino asked for a ficlet for you!!
The invitation had arrived by post owl a few days before:
Ten years since school. Come and have a drink to commemorate, with a time and a place.
It would be ten years to the day since they’d all walked out of the gates of Hogwarts for the last time. Remus thought back to what he had been like then, to what he thought his life might turn out to be. He’d had friends, best friends, was in love. The war was just starting, no one was dead, no one a traitor. It was all fun subterfuge and heroics, back then. The possibilities had seemed limitless.
Of course, it had all gone to hell, and no celebration of intervening years could bring back the giddy hopefulness he’d had on that day.
Remus decided to go for the drink anyway. Before the appointed hour, he spent far too much time dressing himself, trying to look as presentable as a weary, impoverished werewolf could. He had no idea who else might decide to attend the get-together, who was still alive. He had his hopes.
As he walked into the pub, Remus did not immediately see anyone he recognized. Perhaps he wouldn’t, he thought. We will all have changed.
Then his eye was caught by a huddle of blackness in the far corner, stooped shoulders hunched over a lovely golden glass of flaming firewhiskey.
Oh gods. Severus. He hadn’t changed at all.
Remus’s heart leaped into his throat and he walked slowly to the table.
"Severus?" he said, his voice rather higher than normal.
Dark eyes flashed up to meet his gaze, and held just a moment too long. "Lupin. You came."
Remus swallowed hard and sat down without an invitation. "Of course. Ten years, Severus. How could I miss this?" Remus knew his tone was all wrong, far too cheery and light for the dark man across from him, but his heart was pounding and he felt a little light-headed, and no other words would come.
Severus was staring at him with his intense, mirrored eyes, and Remus had to look away. "I should get myself a drink," he said, rising.
"I ordered you a pint," Severus said, still expressionless.
Remus slowly resumed his seat. "Ah. Good." He breathed out, trying to settle himself. "So, this was a good idea. Who else do you think will come?" he asked, fiddling with the coaster on the table.
"Else?" Severus said, voice low.
"Yes. I was thinking, do you recall Maureen...Maureen...something or other? Hufflepuff? She was my partner for..."
"Lupin. I only invited you."
Remus forgot to breathe.
"Oh." Oh gods.
Luckily, his pint arrived at that moment, and Remus grabbed the glass and gulped. He’d been in love with Severus, back then, and maybe, just maybe, even after all the hell they’d been through, he still was.
He drained his pint, slammed it to the table a little too forcefully, and met Severus's challenging stare.
"Good," Remus said. He breathed deep, and then leaned in close to see what would happen next.
